Camp Counselor Resume

Posted in Counselor Resume Examples

Camp counselors organize and lead activities at recreation facilities such as schools, parks, forests, aquatic centers, and even senior centers. These individuals plan the day’s events and instruct participants in the rules of the activities. They must be prepared to assist people with a wide range of skill levels. A camp counselor is also responsible for the safety of his or her team, able to enforce safety rules and have a working knowledge of basic first aid.

A camp counselor resume should focus on the particular qualifications for the job. Grade point averages and diplomas are impressive but more important are certifications relevant to the position. The National Recreation and Park Association offers four levels of certification, as does the American Camp Association. These courses can often be completed online and generally need to be renewed each year. Other significant certifications are medical in nature such as CPR, lifesaving, basic first aid, etc. This can be obtained at the local YMCA or Red Cross office. These certifications are very desirable to employers, especially when the job involves water-related activities. Three separate camp counselor resume format options are presented below, each one designed to assist individuals at a different level of work experience.

Entry-Level Resume

While some positions require a bachelor’s degree, a camp counselor can be an excellent entry-level position and many teenagers use it as their first form of employment. In lieu of prior work experience, education and certification are critical to prove the applicant has an upstanding character and can be trusted with the care and supervision of younger campers. Having attended camp in the past can also be beneficial. In the camp counselor resume example below, Ms. Aldren uses her babysitting experience to demonstrate her ability to engage younger children in educational and entertaining activities. She also mentions her previous attendance at Camp Guyasuta.
