Committee Resignation Letter

If the other priorities in your life have made it too difficult for you to continue serving on a committee, you may be thinking about resigning from your position. If so, you should get started by writing a formal committee resignation letter to the leader or chairperson. This is a good way to demonstrate that you are a professional who does not wish to burn any bridges. Here is a helpful guide to writing your letter of resignation from your committee position in a formal manner.

Format and Content

Resigning from a committee is a little different than quitting a job, but you should still strive to create a professional and dignified committee resignation letter format. It should be made up of approximately three paragraphs, starting with a greeting and the statement of resignation. If you do not wish to disclose why you are resigning, citing personal reasons is reasonable. Also included should be your contact details and an expression of your thanks for the cooperation and understanding of the committee. Send the letter to the chairperson or leader of the committee, as well as any other member who needs to be notified in an official manner.

As a committee member, you may be used to writing letters, but a resignation requires a few special considerations. Try following the example of this a committee resignation letter sample from a school event coordinator. Her life has become too busy to continue serving in the position, so she writes this official letter to the chairperson to notify her of the situation in plenty of time for her to find someone else to fill the position.

Dear Ms. Williams,

I am writing to tell you that I am resigning from my position as the events coordinator on the PTA Committee. As you know, I have recently given birth to my third child and this has caused my family to evaluate its priorities. Unfortunately, the demands of work and family mean that I no longer have the time to devote to coordinating events for the committee. I hope you understand. My last day as the events coordinator will be two weeks from now, May 15, 2014.

I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause to you. I would be happy to devote some time over the next two weeks to transferring my responsibilities over to a replacement coordinator. If you would like to discuss this with me further, I hope you will contact me at (555)-555-5555 or [email] I look forward to hearing with you.

Serving on the PTA Committee has been a great experience and I am happy to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people in planning these events for our children. Thank you for your cooperation and patience with me at this time.

Yours sincerely,
